10 Interesting facts you never knew about Game of Thrones

We explore some interesting facts and figures about the world beneath the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros.

Game of Thrones

BY Aron Devis   July 18 2017

Missed Game of Thrones’s unique blend of sex, blood, and dragons for too long? The good news is, the first episode of season 7 ‘Dragonstone’ aired on last Sunday. And now we have to wait till next Sunday for the next episode ‘Stormborn’. To help the pass the time, here are 10 interesting facts about this authentic artistic phenomenon. Valar morghulis!

1. Ned Stark’s head

During the shooting of season 1 finale, Sean Bean and the cast played football with Ned Stark’s head. During a conversation with his fans on the social news site Reddit, after season 1 finale, Bean admitted that actors had a little fun with the model of his separated head. When asked ‘Was it weird to see your own head on set’ he replied: “It was a bit strange, yeah, a bit creepy. We just kicked it around like a football!”

2. Total death count on Game of Thrones

Death has a constant presence in Game of Thrones: since its origin in 2011, the HBO fantasy show has become known for its powerfully cut-throat attitude towards its cast members. According to one, excellent YouTube video, the death count for Game of Thrones stands at 150,966. This number includes all the predicted deaths in battles, along with major and minor characters actually killed off in the normal running of the show. The biggest death scenes include Battle of Blackwater Bay, the Battle of the Wall, and Hardhome, which inflate the numbers significantly.

3. Jon Snow Fake out

During the filming of season 6 of Game of Thrones Kit Harington (Jon Snow) had to keep sheltering under umbrellas every time a drone flew above, to avoid his revival becoming revealed. He appears to be the boss of misdirections, as latest news infers he has filmed over 15 hours of fake scenes for season 7 to throw the spoiler-leakers into confusion. Good work Kit.

4. Meryn Trant Eyesore

Forget the Red Wedding, the trials by combats, and the stabbing of Jon Snow – the most expensive death in Game of Thrones to date was the decease of Meryn Trant, at the hands of Arya Stark. It occurs in the season 5 finale, Mother’s Mercy, and sees the Stark girl stabbing out Meryn Trant’s eyes. “She couldn’t really poke out his eyes,” says showrunner David Benioff. Some expensive Computer Graphics and make-up work went into that one.

5. Yoga Greyjoy

In real life, Gemma Whelan (Yara Greyjoy) and Kit Harrington (Jon Snow) do yoga together. In an interview, Gemma Whelan mentioned that she and Kit Harington actually knew each other before they joined Game of Thrones. Possibly this extended to several fitness sessions together, including yoga. Don’t expect to see actual Yara and Jon doing much yoga – or any other kind of relaxation exercises – in season 7.

6. Sansa and her Direwolf

Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) adopted Zunni, the Northern Inuit dog that played her pet direwolf on the series’ first season. “Growing up I always wanted a dog, but my parents never wanted one,” Sofie Turner told in an interview. “We kind of fell in love with my character’s direwolf, Lady, on set. We knew Lady died and they wanted to re-home her. My mum persuaded them to let us adopt her.”

7. Different Dany

Emilia Clark, who plays Daenerys Targaryen, is now a family name. She’s the poster girl of the show, and she’s the one followers think is most likely to claim the Iron Throne. But did you know she wasn’t in the original pilot? She and Catelyn Stark were recast after the initial pilot, possibly due to bad performances or unfitting personalities from the original actors. It’s hard to imagine Dany as anyone else or Catelyn Stark without Michelle Fairley.

8. Hodor?

Hodor’s real name was changed from Walder to Willis from book to TV show, probably to avoid any confusion with the Frey characters. It’s not the first time character names were altered. Yara Greyjoy is also known as Asha in the books, and the guy who resurrects The Hound – Ray – is known as The Elder Brother. It’s also worth mentioning that the character ‘Cold Hands’ is Benjen Stark in the show, but that remains unconfirmed in the books.

9. Ramsay Snow almost played Jon Snow

Iwan Rheon was the runner-up to play the character of Jon Snow in Game of Thrones. The role went to Kit Harington, and Iwan Rheon went on to play Roose Bolton’s vicious bastard son, Ramsay, instead.

10. Showrunners and the Books

George R. R. Martin, the author of the novel series ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’, has told the showrunners of Game of Thrones D. B. Weiss and David Benioff of how the series will end. “Last year we went out to Santa Fe for a week to sit down with [Martin] and just talk through where things are going, because we don’t know if we are going to catch up and where exactly that would be,” David Benioff told in an interview. “If you know the ending, then you can lay the groundwork for it. And so we want to know how everything ends. We want to be able to set things up. So we just sat down with him and literally went through every character.”
